From a young age, we realize that the title of “Best Friend” is a coveted one. Am I your friend or your BEST friend? Could I be someone’s best friend, but consider someone else MY best friend? Can you have more than one best friend or is there only one who holds the honor? The whole concept can be tricky to figure out, especially as a kid.
One thing that kids at my school would NEVER admit, unless they wanted to be mercilessly teased, would be to say that their mom was their best friend. As we get older, wiser and less embarrassed at everything she says and does, we realize our mom is more than a mom, she’s one of the best friends we’ll ever have.
In a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate my mom an 11 (and maybe you would, too) — so scroll down to see my list of 11 signs your mom is your best friend, and share yours in the comments!
1. You have history together.
Think about it: she’s the first person you ever met and she’s loved you from day one.
2. She’s the first person you call when you have good (or bad) news.
Got a new job? Call Mom. Boyfriend broke up with you? Call Mom.
3. She keeps you honest, AKA she knows when you’re lying.
They say children learn how to lie around 3 years old. It didn’t fool her then and it doesn’t fool her now!
4. She’s your biggest fan.
No matter what your dreams are, she encourages you to follow them. And if someone hurts you along the way, she’s got your back.
5.You can always depend on her.
Even if you’re not talking because of what you said on Easter, you know she’ll be there to help you when you really need it.
6. You have inside jokes.
Sometimes, all you have to do is give each other a look and you both crack up… much to the bewilderment of those around you!
7. Her opinion matters.
Whether it’s something you want to hear — or something you really don’t — she’ll give it to you straight and you’ll take it to heart.
8. You know each other’s schedules like your own.
When your aunt calls you to see why your mom isn’t answering her phone, you know it’s because she has yoga on Tuesday nights. Namaste.
9. People mention how alike you are.
It used to bother you, but now you’re flattered whenever it happens. Bonus points for owning the same clothes!
10. She gives the best advice.
One of the many perks of knowing you so well is that she knows what you have to do to be the best you can be, even when you’re lost.
11. You’ll always love each other.
Through thick and thin, good times and bad, you’ll always have a special place in your heart for each other.
That’s it! I hope a few things from this list rang true for you, and I’d love to hear more reasons why your mom is your best friend in the comments.
