Emeralds in Ancient Egypt
Egypt was one of the first places on Earth for emerald mining, and it is said that it was Cleopatra’s favorite stone. Emeralds were associated with rebirth and fertility due to their vivid green coloring, and the dead were often buried with it with the hopes of bringing them eternal youth.
Emeralds in Ancient Rome
Nero, emperor of Rome from 54-68 AD, was known for viewing gladiator games through an emerald. During that time, the emerald was believed to have calming properties, improve vision, and advance one’s status.
Emeralds in the Middle Ages
Many believed that if a woman wore emerald, she would remain chaste. It was also believed to ward off spells and evil spirits, and could predict whether or not someone was telling the truth. In many medieval versions of King Arthur, the Holy Grail was created from a large emerald. As you may know, the Holy Grail was thought to provide eternal life. Sounds similar to what the ancient Egyptians believed, doesn’t it?
Emerald’s Metaphysical Powers
To this day, emerald is believed by some to hold unexplainable powers. Known as “the stone of successful and abundant love,” it is thought to be able to draw love into one’s life, give love more freely to others and promote self-love. Emerald is associated with the heart chakra and it is thought to help release negativity, allowing for positive outcomes in one’s actions.
