While the exact origins of the zodiac are uncertain, some sources trace it back to the Warring States period (475–221 BCE), while other sources place it during the Qin dynasty (221–207 BCE). What is clear is that the zodiac system became firmly established during the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE).
According to the popular legend, the zodiac animals earned their place in the calendar through a great race. A rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig all competed, and their order of finishing determined their place in the calendar. Some versions say the snake startled the horse to slip ahead into sixth place, others claim it wrapped around the horse’s hoof.
