On Which Finger Should You Wear Your Birthstone Ring?

Most of us know what our birthstone is. Each month of the year has a corresponding gemstone, so your birthstone would be the gem associated with the month you were born in. Here’s a quick cheat sheet just in case you weren’t sure:

Month / Birthstone

January: Garnet

February: Amethyst

March: Aquamarine

April: Diamond

May: Emerald

June: Pearl

July: Ruby

August: Peridot

September: Sapphire

October: Opal

November: Topaz

December: Turquoise

For a while now, birthstone jewelry has been extremely prevalent in the marketplace. Probably since the colorful stones are unique to you and the timing of your entrance into the world. That kind of makes your birthstone like your own personal gemstone if you think about it.

Rings have become the perfect canvas on which to showcase the beauty of birthstones, but there seems to be a little discussion regarding which hand and which finger they should be worn on. Though there are no standardized rules about this sort of thing, we thought we would help by providing some general facts about wearing birthstone rings and the significance of each finger. That way, you could decide for yourself the right way to wear yours.

Right or Left Hand?

This one is simple. Because while there might be many different spiritual and astrological reasons for wearing your birthstone ring on your right hand versus your left hand, there is only one practical reason: space. This, of course, is if you desire to wear it on your ring finger (which we will get to in a moment).

Because the left hand is usually reserved for romantic bands (i.e., wedding rings, engagement rings, and promise rings), the right hand is the most obvious location to wear your birthstone ring.

What Do the Fingers Mean?

The Thumb – wearing a birthstone ring on the thumb is an expression of liberation. It asserts your belief in free will and self-expression. Though it is not the most comfortable place to wear a ring, it certainly is a prominent position of power.

The Index Finger – wearing a birthstone ring on the index finger shows your initiative as a leader or your aspirations to be one. It is an outward demonstration of your ambition, initiative, and pride.

The Middle Finger – wearing a birthstone ring on the middle finger is symbolic of deep personal introspection or of having the heart of a romantic. Another reason someone might choose this finger is if they are pursuing identity.

The Ring Finger – wearing a birthstone ring on the ring finger denotes a romantic or deeply important relationship with another person. Often couples will have rings personalized with both of their birthstones as an expression of their connection.

The Little Finger – wearing a birthstone ring on the little finger (or pinkie) is a way to make a specific statement. Though small, the little finger attracts more attention than the thumb, believe it or not. This makes it an ideal location to wear a birthstone-graced allegiance to an institution, cause, or family.

Of course, you always have the absolute freedom to wear birthstone rings on whatever hand or finger you like, but this was some very interesting information, right? We hope you found it to be. We certainly appreciate your taking the time to read today’s blog and we encourage you to check out the incredible birthstone rings we offer at The Bradford Exchange.
